Finding The Best Cosmetic Dentist In A Growing Market

Thursday, September 8, 2011

People all over the country are turning to cosmetic dentistry to improve their appearance. In every major city in the United States, this branch of health care seems to be growing as fast as the latest business trend.  People value their appearance, and are influenced by the ability of celebrities and the wealthy to become more attractive.  Unlike some cosmetic surgery, making one’s teeth more attractive is likely to be within the reach of the average person.  This fact fuels the growing interest in this area.

In spite of the explosive growth, it may be hard to find a cosmetic dentist.  A large number of new names springing up may be more confusing than helpful.  Even celebrities make mistakes, and you do not want to rely solely on an advertisement or on luck.  Use the following guidelines to help make the right choice.

1. A good reference is the best start

If you know someone who has had cosmetic dentistry performed, this is the first person to ask. There can be no greater compliment to say how well things turned out.  Unless you are independently wealthy, you will want to ask about price.  It is not considered rude if approached tactfully.  You also need to search for experience.  Not all cosmetic dentists have the same training and experience.  The procedures involved can be quite intensive, and a dentist’s skill in carrying them out will mean all the difference in your final appearance.  You may be heading for possible extractions, whitenings, or a root canal.  At the end of the day, your teeth should look perfect.  Find someone who had significant work done, if you can.  Find out how well things went during the process, and after.

2.  Consider newspapers, television, and other advertising as sources of unbiased information

Word of mouth is usually reliable, but do not write off available media accounts.  You can obtain good information from these sources.  Some celebrities may mention their dentist in interviews.  If that dentist is in your city, it cannot hurt to call up and find out the cost of a procedure.   In looking at media, you will have to sift through the paid endorsements and other marketing tricks.  Usually a paid endorsement or advertisement will be identified as such.  Sometimes that will not be the case, so keep your eyes open and try to rely only on good information.

3. Get a list of dentists that belong to medical organizations and hospitals

Growth in this area has almost certainly led to cosmetic dentists forming their own organizations in the United States. These organizations can refer you to one of their members, and they can also provide credentials.  These can include education, licensing, length of time a dentist has been in practice, and how long he or she has been performing restorative work.  Another source is a hospital.  Dentists who are attached to a hospital frequently serve in emergency rooms and are highly skilled.  Their qualifications are frequently quite advanced.  An emergency room dentist may be a very good source for steering you to a clinic dentist, in the event that he or she does not perform cosmetic work.

The key to selecting a cosmetic dentist is determining his or her reputation in the community, his or her experience, and how he or she is regarded by other dentists.  A dentist’s professional credentials include the length of time of practice and years of experience with restorative work and cosmetic dentistry.  Be an informed consumer.
